About the Settle Area
Settle is situated at the extreme west side of North Yorkshire. It is a town of around 3,000 inhabitants and has been a Market Town since Henry III granted the Town its market charter in 1249. The market is still held every Tuesday in the centre of the Town.
The area includes smaller towns and villages as far as Clapham and Austwick in the north west, Malham to the east and Hellifield and Long Preston to the South, and together they form one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country.
Historically, Settle was part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, moving to North Yorkshire during the country restructuring. It is on the edge of the limestone plateau, in a glaciated valley, and the River Ribble passes through the centre of town over a very picturesque weir.
The best known part of Settle remains the Railway, the world-famous Settle-Carlisle line, starting from the local station. Once one of the engineering marvels of the world, it is still one of the most beautiful rides in the world, through the best of English countryside.
